History:
THE INVASION

Kyle, like anyone else in his world would be the first to tell you the story of superpapalova, or "supes" begins with the invasion of the others. Prior to that earth was - well - normal. Cars, History, Superhero movies, all of that happened - it just happened that one day an alien space ship landed over Canada and blew up chunks of the great white north. Suddenly everybody found themselves enlisted in a war against "the others", mysterious long-legged beings who launched a full scale ground invasion, abducted several human beings and burned major cities to the ground across the planet.

Humanity was forced to unite, and in doing so began to beat The others back, however they never fully defeated them. There was no Independence Day moment, no destroyed chunks of alien space craft. One day the others simply fled leaving mankind to look up at the stars and wonder in confusion if they would ever return or if they were gone for good. Desperate, the governments of the world quickly united into a single body - the GOH or Government Of Humanity and began to collect any and all artifacts left behind by the aliens in a frantic attempt to reverse engineer them. This led to the discovery of -

THE CAIRN.

A research team made up of Military and civilian personnel discovered the cairn in the Las Vegas Desert outside what remained of the so called "Adult Disneyland." possessing crude alien markers, they believe to this day that they discovered an alien burial ground and set above it - the alien remains in the form of a massive obelisk. It was during this discovery however that scientists - in an effort to study the remains within were subjected to a massive influx of unusual radiation. It affected the entire party - scientists and military personnel alike before revealing something that terrified all concerned and is kept at the highest level of GOH security.

A count down clock.

The research team was put into observation before it was believed they had suffered no ill effects from the massive dosage of radiation they all received until...

SUPERPAPLOVA: "SUPES".

It began small. A mild fever and occasional chills. First reported by an adjunct scientist they originally assumed they were getting a cold. Over the second week the fever increased to dangerous levels and the chills gave way to vomiting and expulsion of bodily fluids. By the third week the scientist was observed to have begun to change physically - changes in her skin, her body temperature, even her eyes. The first case, codenamed PATIENT ZERO is lost to memory as she is lost to humanity. By the end of the month she resembled an other in terms of shape and size. She remained mentally human (they believe), however over the course of a month she had been physically mutated into something inhuman.

January 14th. Subject Wandress Alex has apparently completed transformation. No further changes have been recorded. Subject...resembles in shape and size one of the "Others".
- Charles Higawa

It began to spread and it began to happen to everyone else who had been at the Cairn site. From scientists to military personnel each one experienced a complete cellular breakdown and regeneration. Scientist Charles Higawa determined that the proximity to the Cairn and the source of the radiation dictated the severity of the so-called transformations however the ability for powers beyond human norms - indeed beyond the human imagination remained high.

NOTE: Subject "patient Zero" has demonstrated what can only be described as mild telekenesis. Subject has ceased to speak English or any known human language
-Charles Higawa

The team, of which Kyle Shaw was a member, did their best to hold it together until they discovered that being in the room with certain former friends and coworkers caused physical pain. They were unable to function with certain individuals

Observation from Sgt. Mary Paker: It's like there's a - a cattle prod in my back. Every time I see David, Every time I try and talk to him I get a shock to the chest. It's like there's a voice in the back of my head that says he's the enemy and I have to do everything in my power to kill him.
- Charles Higawa - observer.

The transformations were traced to a viral strain that infected hosts white blood cells, broke them down from the inside, and rewrote them. While it was originally believed that this virus - dubed "superpaplova" due to the telekinesis exhibited by Patient Zero would only affect the research team, others began coming forward with friends and family members exhibiting symptoms. Faced with a fully fledged outbreak the government was forced to conclude that whatever "The Others" had left behind it was less of a graveyard and more of a potential biological weapon poised to wipe out life on earth.

Care for these infected individuals was needed.

REDEMPTION ONE

Built in the center of the salt flats using alien technology - Redemption One was a joke that was never meant to be a solution to the problem. Billed as "The most advanced hospital in the world" The GOH contained those who were deemed to be infected within the domed city in the hope that they would find a cure. A week into the first patients being brought in the city had divided itself into two groups - the upper and lower barracks. The lower barracks claimed they had been abused, beaten, starved, and tortured due to their mutations and abilities. They kidnapped and purposefully infected the hospital staff with Superpaplova as a means of rebellion.

The upper barracks contacted the GOH with a message. According to their leader who dubbed himself Guardian and who had been gifted with extraordinary youth and agility because of the virus - the lower barracks had proven themselves to be dangerous and untrustworthy. Members of the Upper Barracks would keep them in line and asked - in return - to be allowed to occasionally leave the city and use their abilities for the betterment of mankind. They claimed these abilities were "the next stage of human evolution."

The government classified the two organizations into two opposing groups. For the sake of reports they used designations. They called the lower barracks villains.

They named the upper barracks heroes.

16 YEARS LATER

Redemption One has become a comic book city in miniature - unable to sustain a growing population of sick individuals and abandoning all pretense at "hospitalization" for victims of Superpaplova. The upper barracks, now ruled by a council of 8 who call themselves "Liberty Force" are called upon regularly by the GOH to deal with everything from insurgency to terrorism to natural disasters. The government employs ROOF -Redemption One Observation Force - to oversee the Heroes and Villains and supervise the study of the countdown clock.

Outside of Redemption One is Purgatory - a city of ex fans, superhero junkies, and people who grew up to either draw, write, or love comic books who attempt regularly to get into the city to live the life they've wanted since they were kids. Upon occasion ROOF will be bribed to let someone in, however as it's believed the air inside is thick with the virus they usually drag a "desperate groupie" out back and beat them. Most simply live their lives and act as support for the citizens inside the city.

All of this changes when a girl named Cadie Shaw-Higawa's brother Sam is taken by ROOF into the city after he exhibits signs of contagion and nearly kills his teacher. Sam, being five, is dragged screaming into a place where he has no friends or family and Cadie sets off to at least try and bring her brother something to comfort him in the place where he will be forced to spend the rest of his life. Her actions will set in motion a chain of events that will not only expose the corruption inherent within the city as well as it's mysteries - but that will change the fate of humanity as they know it.

KYLE SHAW: CODENAME GARGOYLE

Born to ordinary parents in Las Vegas Nevada the biggest distinguishing feature to Kyle Shaw is he - like most males grew up wanting to be Captain America. He achieved this dream with relative success by becoming a Las Vegas Sheriff's Deputy. Looking forward to a career in protecting his home town, he met a girl (three days on the job and he meets a girl so beautiful he crashes his bike into a tree and breaks his arm in 3 places because he couldn't stop thinking about her) everything was going picture perfect.

Until the others showed up.

Over the course of the invasion he saved the girl - Katie Portsmouth's life. He was unable to save the life of her sister Cadie but managed to save two of Cadie's classmates, genius Charlie Higawa and Melinda Snowe. The four of them, Katie, Charlie, Melinda, and Kyle became friends and battled the Others together, essentially ending their childhoods and effectively making them members of GOH and the US military. When the others left, Kyle followed his mentor Lt. Colonel William Blaine to the CAIRN site where he was exposed along with 24 others to the first wave of the radiation that created superpaplova.

Originally he believed he escaped infection and made love to Katie - whom he had married thereby infecting her with the virus. Gradually however as Blaine succumbed (Codename: Troll) and Kyle began to change physically Charlie worked around the clock to save the man he looked up to as brother and friend.

There was no saving Kyle and the disease took it's course just as Katie began to show symptoms. Physically altered, Kyle went mad upon realizing he no-longer resembled anything human and rampaged through downtown Las Vegas. The city he had sworn to defend with his life became his playground as he indulged in the destruction he had kept bottled up in his soul for most of his life before being knocked out and dragged to Redemption One.

Upon awakening in the Lower Barracks he was subjected to a degree of torture including starvation and experimentation in an effort to cure him. When efforts were made to break them out he joined the rebellion - stopping only to save a previously infected scientist - Allison Verger who would eventually become the villainess Quick Draw. Listed in ROOF's database as "Gargoyle", he fled into the lower barracks of the city taking Quick Draw with him in an effort to keep her safe.

Those in the lower barracks killed to survive and in doing so quickly discovered that Superpaplova was fatal. The more these abilities were used the more likely it was to shorten a lifespan. Gargoyle had one of the former scientists open up the brains of one of their compatriots to discover that the body was rotted from the inside out. While these abilities seemed like a gift, if they were used and abused they faced a severe count-down clock. Upon being dubbed villains the Lower Barracks attempted to alert their fellow infected to the disease's progression - however both sides were held by that same biochemical shock. Prolonged exposure to either side heightened aggression, caused behavioral changes, and could eventually induce coma.

It appeared as though humanity, in some cosmic joke, had been forced to act out the stories of comic adventure they had come to love and worship. Unable to function, both sides reached an uneasy truce in a city too small for their rapidly expanding population until Cadie Shaw-Higawa appeared.

Unknown to Kyle, Cadie was his daughter by Hawk, a member of the "Liberty Force" and a member of the ruling council of Redemption. Hawk had been classified as a "heroine" by ROOF and used her abilities and inherent kindness for good and to save lives. Hawk and Gargoyle frequently clashed with Hawk using her fire and light powers to attempt to injure him and he attempted to kill her. When Hawk had discovered the pregnancy she was hid by their mutual friend Charlie out of fear that the child would be co-opted by the government in an attempt to cure her - or worse - exploit any potential abilities she might have. Raised as a sister to his own son, Charlie took care of Cadie and did his best to love her while Melinda resented the strain on her marriage and resented Hawk and Gargoyle for both their abilities and their "True" love. Upon discovering that Guardian was keeping the news of the fatalities caused by superpaplova a secret, Cadie joined with her parents to expose him. The upper and lower barracks did battle in a massive superhero and super-villain fight that left Redemption One's dome broken. It was repaired and Hawk announced her intention to supervise the younger healthier superheros to attempt to recapture any dangerous members of the lower barracks.

Kyle determined that Redemption One would make an excellent jail and volunteered due to his criminal record and the crimes he committed as Gargoyle to oversee it as Warden - thereby never leaving Redemption but restoring his lost honor and humanity.

As the battle concluded however the count down clock's final message was translated by the ROOF team:

WE. WILL. RETURN.

Personality:

Contracts: Each character comes into game through an Ingress that is either on the ship or on a planet they've stopped at. They are told that they were brought here outside of anyone's control because the Ingress machines are broken. The captains and crew offer them a place on the ship to work and live until they reach the planet the Ingress was created on. They believe that there it can be fixed and everyone sent home. It's up to you to decide how your character would react and if they would willingly sign the contract and board the ship. Write us a couple lines here telling us their thoughts on it as it's the only way that they would be allowed to board. (This doesn't mean your character 'has' to believe the captains. They could choose the ship life because they are bored, don't want to go home, don't want left on a strange planet. The reason is up to you. Get creative with it.)

Abilities/Skills: Kyle is an 8 foot tall gargoyle who looks like a gargoyle. While he possesses no wings he has massive muscles, teeth, claws, and fangs. Because of his size his clothing is traditionally motley, he's used to finding whatever fits. He does his best to do this to hide the fact that the disease left him sexually incapable and indeed sexless. He's a big stone dude and with that comes some benefits.

STRENGTH Kyle has above average strength measured by being able to lift - and throw - a 2 ton car several hundred feet.

STONE SKIN Kyle has impenetrable skin in accordance with most firearms circa 21rst century earth. His skin could and can be cracked by power blasts, laser beams, and magical usage most likely. It's simply that firing a magnum at him, or multiple blasts from a machine gun will just really make him mad.

AGILITY While Kyle can't fly (and he hates Hawk forever for being able to do so) he can leap - thanks to his strength he can leap across city blocks with relative ease and cling to the sides of buildings.

Police Training and Marksmanship Kyle is a well trained marksman capable with several different firearms - though they are difficult to use due to his size and shape. He is also well trained in hand to hand combat, investigative techniques, and first aid.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

STRENGTHS Increased strength, agility, unbreakable stone skin, police training.
WEAKNESSES touching other individuals infected with superpaplova - depending on a roll of the dice - can cause him weakness, dizziness, and comatose states followed by eventual expiration. The nearest that both sides can figure is that it has to do with temper. If a character is inherently good they'll end up a "hero", if a character is "bad" they'll end up a villain.

LIVING WITH SUPERPAPLOVA
Living with superpaplova puts you on a timeline, the more you use your abilities the more likely it is you'll expire. Fighting Hawk and using his agility in this case leaves him weak and is rotting his brain and body from the inside out. His strength and skin are apparently fine with each other. The stages are as follows:

Stage One: Fever and Cold symptoms.
Stage Two: Vomiting and excruciating pain.
Stage Three: physical and mental changes appear.
Stage Four: Changes complete. Individual is reclassified and sent to Redemption.

CAN MY CHARACTER CATCH SUPES?
If you want to play it out I don't see why not however it would alter a character so I'm going to go ahead and say "no".

I PLAY A CHARACTER WITH SUPERPOWERS
If you play a "good" character and what Kyle to feel uncomfortable around them that totally works, PM me and we can hash out the details. If not, if your character came by those abilities honestly (born or gifted, etc.) then chances are he'll be fine and treat that person normally.

CAN MY CHARACTER TAKE A SAMPLE OF KYLE'S BLOOD AND USE IT FOR A VACCINE/SUPERPOWERED WEAPON?
Given that you'd have to take blood from his eye socket it'd be difficult but I'd be game for it. However it wouldn't work in the end because - again - fundamentally altering a character physically or making them ill.

Items: Please list all items that the character has on them at the time of their arrival. Note that some items may be lost within the Ingress, and it will be noted upon acceptance.

SAMPLES
Network Sample: How would your character address the network and other characters on the ship; must be five to eight lines.

Prose/Action Sample: Minimum of 250 words and gives us a sense of how they think and react.

One sample must be in an in-game setting; test drive memes or written are both accepted. The other may be linked from the test drive meme or anywhere else. (Please delete this line before submitting your application).
